There is no enough evidence about the origin of the name of Dhaka. Some of the common opinions are as follows: a) once the area was covered with a lot of Diaper phudosa trees, b) On the day of the inauguration of the mayor of the capital, drum was playing on the order of Islam Kha, c) a commonplace language named “Dhakabhasa” was very common in the region, d) Dacca is mentioned as an observatory center in Rajtarangi. Mr Jowao-d-Barrows mentioned the region as an important place at his atlas. In 1610 Islam Khan transferred the capital from Rajamahal to Dacca and named Jahangirnagar after the then Mughal emperor Jahangir. In the pre- Mughal era Dacca was an important local trade center because of the location of riverside. It was a rich production Center also. The cotton based fabrics named “Moslin” was then very popular around the world. It exported with high volume to the other part of the world. For the Muslin fabrics, European Companies paid a high quantity of Gold and Silver. In 1829 Dacca was adorned as a large divisional Headquarter and around 1885 Dacca was built the largest civilians center after Calcutta. During 1905-1911, the importance of Dacca dramatically increased when it is declared as the Capital of the province of newly formed East Bengal and Assam administration. In 1947, the end of British colonial rule and the establishment of an independent state of Pakistan in the name of the new province of East Pakistan, the region became more stable because of the development. It may be the only province in the new administrative headquarters, where sat the Parliament assemble. In 1971, when Bangladesh achieved her independence, Dhaka is adorned as the capital of newly born ed country named Bangladesh. Dhaka division is established in 1929 during the east India company period and bordered by Meghalaya (Indian State) to the north, Barisal division to the south, Chittagong division to the south- east, Sylhet division to the east, Rangpur division to the north- west, Rajshahi and Khulna division to the west. There are 17 districts in Dhaka division. The total area of the division is 31,177.74 Sq Kilometers. The total population of the division is 4,74,24,418 ( male- 2,41,72,317 and female 2,32,52,101) which is about 29.64% of the total population of Bangladesh. Average sex ratio is 104:100 and annual growth rate of the division is 1.93%. Among the population 1,27,15,797 live in urban area, 28,69,038 live in other urban area and 3,18,39,583 people live in rural area. The average literacy rate of the division is 54.20% (Male 57.00% and female 51.30%). Average school school attendance rate is 50.70% for 5 to 24 years old. Chittagong Division, Bangladesh


The region is located in the south- eastern part of Bangladesh. Chittagong had been a sea port since the ancient time. Traders from different countries including Arab had business transactions with this port since 9th century. Sultan Fakruddin Mubarak Shah of Sonargaon conquered Chittagong in 1340. After the defeat of Sultan Giasuddin Mahmud Shah by Sher- Shah in 1538 AD, the Arakanise again captured Chittagong. The region was under the kingdom of Arakan during sixth and seventh centuries. During 17th century the region faced many attacks of Portuguese pirates. Before the Muslim conquered, Chittagong had been either under the control of the Arakans or under the kings of Burma. The Mughal Commander Bujurg Umed Khan expelled the Portuguese pirates from the region and established Chittagong district in 1666 and named Islamabad. Next the region was named Chattal and Chandgaon. The Chittagong Hill- Tracts were separated from Chittagong in 1860. Before 1995, greater Sylhet division was a part of Chittagong Division. Chittagong division is geographically the largest of the seven administrative division of Bangladesh. It covers the most south- eastern part of Bangladesh consisting 11 districts. The total area of the division is 33,771.18 Sq Kilometers and total population is 2,84,23,019 (Male- 1,39,33,314 and Female- 1,44,89,705) which is 17.76% of the total population of Bangladesh. Average sex ratio of Chittagong division is 96:100 and average annual growth rate is 1.63%. Average population density of the division is 838/Sq Km. Among the population, 57,68,695 people live in urban area,  11,36,785 people live in other urban area and 2,15,17,539 people live in rural area. Average literacy rate is 52.70%. Among them, male literacy rate is 53.90% and female is 51.50%. School attendance rate for both sexes is 52.30% for 5 to 24 years old. Average urbanization rate of the division is 24.30%. Mountains, rivers, valleys, forests, sea etc natural features made the division individual from other divisions. The average temperature of the region is maximum 33.80 C and minimum 14.50 C. Rajshahi is one of the seven administrative divisions of Bangladesh. It is also a metropolitan area among the nine and located in the mid- western part of Bangladesh. Rajshahi municipality is one of the ancient municipalities in Bangladesh and established in 1876 during the East India Company period. Rajshahi municipality was upgraded into City Corporation in 1991. The mighty river Padma bordered Rajshahi division to the south and the Jamuna River bordered to the eastern part of Rajshahi division and Rangpur division to the north and to the west the division is bordered with West Bengal of India. The ancient name of the region was “Barendravhumi”. Rajshahi region was once a part of Pundrubardhan of the ancient Banga state. The capital of Vijoy Sen was located 9 miles away to the west of Rajshahi town. Indigo resistance movement spread over Rajshahi during 1859-60. During the mass upsurge in 1969 Dr. Shamsuzzoha of Rajshahi University was killed when the great soul stood forward to protect his students. The largest mass- graveyard of Bangladesh located in the Rajshahi University area. Rajshahi district was established in 1772. Maldaha, Bogra, Pabna, Natore and Nawabganj districts were established dividing this district. There is a strong communicating infrastructure in the region. It takes about five hours road journey to communicate from the capital city Dhaka to Rajshahi. Until 2010 Rajshahi division contains 16 districts. Early in the same year, Rangpur division was formed with the 08 districts of the northern part of Rajshahi division. Now there are 08 districts in Rajshahi division. The major cities of Rajshahi division are Rajshahi, Bogra, Sirajganj, Pabna, Natore, Naogaon etc. The total current area of the division is 18,153.08 Sq Km. Total population of the division is 1,84,84,858 (male- 92,56,910 and female- 92,27,948) which is 11.55% of the total population of Bangladesh. Average sex ratio of Rajshahi division is 100:100 and annual growth rate of the division is 1.21%. The average population density is 1,018/Sq Km. Among the population 30,41,999 live in urban area, 275,023 live in other urban area and 1,51,67,836 people live in rural area. The average literacy rate of the division is 48.00% (Male- 50.50% and female- 46.60%). Average school school attendance rate is 53.50% for 5 to 24 years old. The average urbanization rate of the division is 17.94%. Rajshahi is famous for different kinds of mango production and for world famous silk industries. So Rajshahi is called “Silk City”. Khulna division is located in the south- western part of Bangladesh. It is bordered by Rajshahi division to the north, The Bay of Bengal to the south, Dhaka and Barisal division to the east and the West Bengal (Indian state) to the west. The region also includes a number of islands of the Bay of Bengal. The previous name of the region was “Jalalabad”. Khulna was the first subdivision of joint Bengal during the east India Company Period. Khulna is one of the districts that were included with the current name in joint Bengal province. Khulna district is formed in 1882. At the time of Partition in 1947, Khulna was the 3rd largest district and now it is the 4Th largest district of Bangladesh. Independent Bangladesh was established in 16 December 1971, but Khulna was under the control of Pakistani Army. The Pakistani Army surrendered in the Circuit House ground on 17 December and Khulna got her Independence. Khulna municipality was established in 1984 and upgraded into City Corporation in 1990. The world largest mangrove forest Sundarban is located in the greater Khulna region. The second largest sea port of Bangladesh named Mongla sea port located in Khulna division 38 Km away from Khulna metropolitan area. Khulna is strongly connected by highways and a railway links to Northern Bangladesh and the capital city Dhaka along with other parts of the whole country. There is no international airport in Khulna division but now Jessore is a busy local airport of the division. Once, Khulna was the lifeblood of formerly East Pakistan for its jute industries. There are three universities named Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) and Khulna Medical College in the region. There are 10 districts in Khulna division. The major cities of Khulna division are Khulna, Jessore, Kushtia, Bagerhat, Satkhira etc. The total area of the division is 22,284.22 Sq Kilometers. Total population of the division is 1,56,87,759 (male- 78,42,533 and female- 78,45,226) which is 9.80% of the total population of Bangladesh. Average sex ratio of the division is 100:100 and annual growth rate is 0.64%. The average population density in Khulna division is 704/Sq Km. Among the population 22,92,000 live in urban area, 530,121 live in other urban area and 1,28,65,638 people live in rural area. The average literacy rate of the division is 53.20% (Male- 55.70% and female- 50.70%). Average school school attendance rate is 56.80% for 5 to 24 years old. Barisal is one of the seven administrative divisions and located in the south- central part of Bangladesh. The division is bordered by Dhaka division to the north, the Bay of Bengal to the south, Chittagong division to the east and Khulna division to the west. There is a strong network of rivers and canals in the region. The land of the region is very fertile. So it is called the “Sassya Vander” (store of corns) of Bangladesh. The ancient name of the region was “Chandradip” and the capital of the kingdom was Bakla founded by Danuj Madhab or Danuj Mardhan Dev. In the early seventeenth century Mughel rule the Bengal region including formerly “Sarker Bakla” (current Barisal) and established their capital in Dhaka. At this time, Barisal was more accessible to businessmen and most develop than that of previous age. Arakenese and Portuguese pirates’ attack was very common phenomenon at this time in coastal area. After 1666 Mughal fleet root out such kind of robberies and distributed the lands of the region to Talukder to cultivation by the condition of certain annual revenue.  Formerly Bakerganj disrict was established in 1797 during the east India company period. Later on it was renamed as Barisal district. The district was upgraded into a municipality in 1876. Barisal was declared a division on 1 January, 1993. World famous Kuakata sea beach is located in the division in Barguna district. There is no international airport in Barisal division but a running local airport in Barisal city. There are 06 districts in Barisal division. The total area of the division is 13,225.20 Sq Km. Total population of the division is 83,25,666 (male- 40,89,508 and female- 42,36,158) which is 5.20% of the total population of Bangladesh. Average sex ratio of the division is 97:100 and annual growth rate is 0.18%. The average population density in Barisal division is 630/Sq Km. Among the population 948,844 live in urban area, 413,099 live in other urban area and 69,63,723 people live in rural area. The average literacy rate of the division is 56.80% (Male- 57.60% and female- 55.90%). Average school school attendance rate is 57.00% for 5 to 24 years old.
