Narayanganj District, Bangladesh
Narayanganj is the second largest river
port of Bangladesh and the district was named after Bicon Lal Panday who is also known as Luxmi
Narayan Thagure. In 1766, he leased the region from British east India Company.
It is popularly known as the Dandy of East
due to presence of a number of jute mills and just 16 Km away from the capital
city Dhaka. Sitalakkhya River is flowing through Narayanganj. Narayanganj
Munacipality is formed in September 08, 1876 and adorned as a subdivision in
1947. Narayanganj is promoted as a district in February 15, 1984. The area of
current Narayanganj District is about 684.37 Sq Km. The weather is fairly moderate
and the summer and winter are in the interval in the region. The average
temperature of the district is 17.5° F. The amount of the annual average
rainfall is 183 CM. The Geo position of the district is between 23°34’ to 24°15'
North Latitude and between 90°27' to 90°59' East Longitude.

Narayanganj district is
bordered by Narsingdi and Brahmanbaria to the north, Munshiganj district to the
south, Comilla district to the East and Dhaka district to the west.
Administration: Narayanganj is recently promoted as a city
corporation. The first Mayor of Narayanganj city corporation is Shelina Hayat
Ivee. It has 05 Municipality named Shiddhirgonj, Kadamrasul, Tarabo, Kanchon,
Sonargaon and 05 upazilla named Narayangonj Sadar, Bandar, Rupgonj, Araihazar
and Sonargaon containing 41 unions, 619 Maujas, and 1204 village outside of
city corporation.

and Population density 5897/ Sq Km.
Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Narayanganj district is 79.24%, School Attendance rate is 83.47% for 5 to 24
years age group. There are 20 colleges (including 04 Govt colleges), 10 Higher
secondary school, 126 High School (Including 02 Govt Schools), 13 Junior high
School, 1425 Primary School including (425 Govt), 54 Madrasha, 01 Marine
Institute and 04 Vocational Institute (including Govt- 02) in Narayanganj.
