Narail District is located in the south- western part of Bangladesh. The naming of Narail is debatable by historians. Some historians think that Narail was named after great saint Narial Fakir. Researcher S M Rais Uddin Ahmed thinks that the word Narail came from “Loreall.” It means who fight against enemies. During the period of Khan Jahan Ali (R) such Lorealls guard the border standing on the high end of the bank of border canals. Indigo Revolt (1859-1860), Peasant movement, Tebhaga movement (1946) etc are the remarkable chapters of the region. During the East India Company ruling period, Narail subdivision was established in 1861 under Jessore district. The administrative area of the region was reformed in many times. Finally 01 March 1984, Narail subdivision was upgraded into district. The Geo position of the district is between 23˚10’ North latitudes and between  89˚30’ east longitude.

Bordered By: Narail District is bordered by Magura district in the north, Khulna district in the south, Faridpur and Gopalganj district in the east, Jessore district in the west.

Administration: The area of Narail is 967.99 Sq Km. It is under Khulna Division. There are 03 Municipalities in Narail named Narail, Kalia and Lohagora. The number of Upazilla (sub district) in Narail district is 03, named- Narail Sadar, Kalia and Lohagora containing 38 Unions, 406 Mauzas and 635 Villages. 

Population: The total population of Narail district is 721,668 (Male- 353,527 and Female- 368,141), Sex ratio 96:100, Population Density 746/Sq Km and annual growth rate is 0.32%.

Literacy: The Literacy Rate of Narail district is 61.30% (Male- 63.30% and Female- 59.30%), School attendance rate is 57.80% for 5 to 24 years age group.
