About Jamalpur District, Bangladesh


To get the correct idea about the history of jamalpur district of Bangladesh, we have to remember great saints Hazrat Shah Jamal (R) and Hazrat Shah Kamal (R). They came here to spread Islam and the speech of humanity from Yemen during the period of Mughal emperor Akbar. Jamalpur is named after Hazrat Shah Jamal (R). The previous name of Jamalpur city was “Singhajani”. Fakir Sannyasi Rebellion (1772-1790), Indigo Resistance Movement (1829), famine (1874) are the remarkable chapters of the region.

Jamalpur started its journey as the first Mahakuma (Sub division) of Mymensingh in 1845. The movement of Jamalpur district creation introduced in 1912 after the ‘Bangavanga’. Mr Lord Karjon decelerated Jamalpur as a district in 1912 but couldn’t implement it due to various obstacle against the East India Company during the time. To set up Jamalpur district headquarters, government acquired 235 acres of land in the municipal area in 1917. In 1938, some renowned educationist raise their hands to set up Jamalpur district and spreaded the movement among the civil people. But even the then British government could not take final decision about the matter. They were in a fix between Jamalput and Tangali, where the district headquarters should be set up. By this time the great flood, communal riots etc made delay the formation of Jamalpur district. So it took 133 years to format Jamalpur district after the formation of Jamalpur sub division.

During the liberation war Jamalpur achieved independence in 10 December. After the newly born independent country, the movement of the formation of Jamalpur district accelerated. In 1975 Bangabandhu Sheakh Mujibur Rahaman committed to form Jamalpur district. Finally 26 December 1978, Jamalpur is adorned as a district. The Geo position of the district is between 24˚40’ to 25˚20’ North latitudes and between 89˚40’ to 90˚10’ east longitude.

Jamalpur District is bordered by Kurigram and Sherpur districts and Meghalaya (Indian State) to the north, Tangail district to the south, Mymenisigh and Sherpur districts to the east, Bogra district and Jamuna River to the west.

Administration: The area of Jamalpur is 2115.16 Sq Km. It is under Dhaka Division. There are 06 Municipalities in Jamalpur named Melandah, Dewanganj, Jamalpur, Sharishabari, Madarganj and Islampur. About Joypurhat District, Bangladesh


Joypurhat is small district located in the northern part of Bangladesh. The previous name of the region was “Baghabari Hat” and next it was written “Gopandraganj Hat” in historical documents. During the British East India period, Joypurhat Railway station and post office was established and named Joypurhat to make differ with the name of Joypur located in current India. Then the region got familiarity with the name of Joypurhat with the passing of age. A police station named Joypurhat was established in 1907. Joypurhat was the only subdivision of the formerly Bogra district. After the liberation of Bangladesh, Joypurhat started its journey as a district in 1984. Saotal, Orao, Munda, Mohali, Mohanta, Rajhangshi etc tribes also found in the district and total population of such tribes is about forty seven thousand.

Jessore district is located in the south- western borderline of Bangladesh and the first district of joint Bengal and now the 13Th largest district in Bangladesh. Once, the region was a deep forestry area. In the last few decades of 17Th century and up to mid of 18Th century, Jessore was an independent state. The naming of Jessore is debatable by historians. The ancient name of the region was “Khalifatabad.” It is the first district of joint Bengal. During the beginning of of British East India Company Period, Jessore district was formed in 1786. On the time of partition of India in 1947, Jessore was also partially divided. The entire district excepting Boangaon and Gaighata police stations were included in East Pakistan. In 1960, Mohammadpur police station of Magura sub division and Alfadanga police station of Narail subdivision were included in Faridpur district. After the liberation of Bangladesh, as the part of administrative decentralization; Jessore district was reformed in 1984. As a result four subdivisions named Narail, Magura, Jhenaidah and Sadar started their journey as separate districts. The Geo position of the district is between 22˚47’ to 23˚47’ North latitudes and between 88˚40’ to 89˚50’ east longitude.

Jhalokati is a small district located in the southern coastal part of Bangladesh. It is not sure when the first human habitation introduced in the region but it is to be understood from the name that Kaibarta fishermen first introduced planting in the region in the most ancient period. Kaibarta fishermen were called Jhalo and their residential place was called Jhalopara. Most of the historians think that the name Jhalokati came from the word Jhalopara. Most of the people of then Jhalokati river port were Kaibarta that means fishermen.

The ancient name of the region was “Moharajganj.” Jhalokati was once called the “Second Calcatta” because of its commercial importance. The communication facilities of the region attracted the merchants of East India Company, Dutch, French etc and they established their trade centers in the region. Jhalokati subdivision was established in 1972 and was turned into a district in 1984 after the liberation of Bangladesh. The Geo position of the district is between 22˚25’ to 22˚49’ North latitudes and between 90˚58’ to 90˚18’ east longitude. Jhalokati is the residence of the maternal uncle of great poet Jibonanondo Das.

Jhenaidah district is the gateway of southern part of Bangladesh. The previous name of the region was “Gangadighi.” The Ganga Dighi (current Baro Bazar) of Kaliganj upazila of the region once had been a famous port of India. It has been mentioned in the Greek history that oysters and muslin were used to be exported from this port in the ancient time. Indigo resistance movements (1860), Peasant Movement, Fakir- Sannayashi Movement etc are the remarkable chapters of the region. At the beginning of the British rule Jhenaidah was a police out- post and was turned into a police station in 1793. The Jhenaidah subdivision was established in 1862 and was turned into a district on 23 February 1984 after the liberation of Bangladesh. The Geo position of the district is between 23˚15’ to 23˚45’ North latitudes and between 88˚45’ to 89˚15’ east longitude.
