Sherpur district is located in the central part of Bangladesh. In the ancient time, the region was a part of the kingdom of the Kamrupa. During the period of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, this area was called “Dash Kahania Baju”. During the Nababi period, the region is conquered by Nawab Sher Ali Gazi and established an independent region. Dash Kahania Pargana was named Sherpur after Sher Ali Gazi, the last landlord of the Gazi dynasty. During the Jamidary period, Sherpur Municipality was established in 1869. Fakir-Sannyasi Revolts (1914 and 1917), the communists revolted (1838-1848), devastating earth quack (1897) are the remarkable chapters of the region. During the British and Pakistan period the region was named Sherpur Circle. After the liberation of Bangladesh, Bangbandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman, the founder of Bangladesh declared Sherpur as the 61st district of Bangladesh. But after the political suspension, Major Ziaur Rahaman formerly president declared Sherpur as a Mahakuma (Sub division) in 1979. Finally 22 February 1984, president Ershad adorned Sherpur as a district and 05 police station of the district was upgraded as sub- district. The area of Sherpur district is 1364.67 Sq Km. The Geo position of the district is between 25˚18’24’’ to 24˚52’09’’ North latitudes and between 90˚18’26’’ to 89˚52’56’’ east longitude.

Sherpur District is bordered by Meghalaya district (India) to the north, Jamalpur and a part of Mymenshigh district to the south, Mymensingh District to the east and Jamalpur district to the west.

Administration: There are 04 Municipalities in Sherpur named Nalitabari, Sherpur, Sreebardi and Nokla. The number of Upazilla (sub district) in Sherpur district is 05, named- Sherpur Sadar, Nalitabari, Shribordi, Nokla and Zhinaigati containing 52 Unions, 434 Mauzas and 695 Villages.
