Buddhist dhatu jadi is called as the largest Buddhist temple in Bangladesh, located in Purpara on the top of a high hill (about 200 feet high), just 4 km away from Bandarban city aside the Bandarban-Rangamati roadway. Buddhist Dhatu Jadi is popularly known as Golden Temple of Bandarban among the tourists. It is one excellent place for a family tour and has great tourism value.  The golden temple is built at the top of 60 meter hill, completely followed the architect of South-East Asian region and It is the second largest  Buddhist temple in Bangladesh. The constriction of the golden temple was started in 1995 and completed in 2000.

The attractive design of Buddhist heritage and tradition with the modern archeological technique and golden touch of the site make very amazing to the visitors. There is a museum aside the golden temple. The tourists may learn about the historical background of Buddhist religion from here. There is a pond on the top of the high hill and it is called the pond of God.

How to Go Golden Temple

When Golden temple is very near of Bandarban town, you may go there by Auto rickshaw, Chander Gari (Public Jeep), car etc. It may take about 30 minutes to go. 


Foods and accommodation in Golden Temple

There is neither good hotel to stay nor good foods facility to take. From my own experience, it is better to stay in Bandarban Town and take dry foods to start journey to Golden temple in the morning.

Bijoy is the highest peak of Tajindong about 4500 feet high from the sea level. Bijoy is claimed the highest peak of Bangladesh located at Ramakri, pangsha union under Ruma upazilla, about 70 km away from Bandarban town of Bangladesh. Locally it is called “Tajing” (means Great and Dong means Hill). So Tajingdong means Great Hill.

A number of tourist visits Tajingdong every year to enjoy the experience of adventure, thrill and surprise. It is a place of amazing beauty. The landscapes of this area certainly soothe both eyes and mind of the adventurous travelers. How to go to Tajingdong

For visiting Tajingdong you have to use Bandarban- Ruma- Bogalake- Tajingdong route. From Bandarban town you have to go to Ruma bazaar about 50 kilometers away from Bandarban. You should remember that after 4 pm you are not allowed to leave Ruma for visiting Bogalake, Keokradong or Tajingdong. As it is a remote area and the road is not so smooth. From Ruma you can hire a Chander Gari (public jeep) up to Koikhong Jhiri. It may be cost about tk 2000-2500. You can also go there by local Chander Gari. You may also hire a boat from Ruma Bazar to Koikhong Jhiri. Then you have to walk to the Boga Lake and finally to Tajingdong. Winter is the high time to hike Tajingdong. You should never think to hike Tajingdong in rainy season.


Foods and Accommodation in Tajingdong

There is no good communication, no restaurant and no formal accommodation. From my own experience, it is better to stay in tribal village in Boga Lake at night to start journey to Tajindong. In the next day, you should better to start your journey early in the morning from Boga Lake to reach Tajingdong. It may take approx 7 to 8 hours to reach Tajingdong depending on the weather, guide, your stamina and other various factors. It is better to take local guide with you from Ruma.


Consciousness and Precautions before trekking to Bijoy, Tajingdong

  • You have to mentally and physically prepare for a tough and rough journey in such long way. 
  • Be careful about using local water.
  • Bandarban is a malaria affected zone. So you should carry mosquito resistant kits.
  • You should carry some dry foods, water purifying kits and first aid box with particular medicine.  
  • You should carry water resistant bag and should avoid heavy loads of baggage.
  • Be friendly with the local inhabitants.
  • Be careful and seek permission from the ethnic people before taking photographs.
  • There is no mobile network, no good road communication.
  • Try to avoid unknown persons and strangers on the way.
  • It is better to start the journey in a group.
  •  All non-Bangladeshis are required to contact and register his particulars in the local police station


Nilachal Bandarban

Nilachal is one of the nearest and most beautiful tourist place in Bangladesh located at Tigerpara, just 5 km away from Bandarban. Locally it is known as Tiger Hill. Someone call it Swarga Puri (place of haven) due to its illusive and wild landscape. Nilachal is about 2000 feet above the sea level. Standing at the peak of Nilachal, you can see the total glance of Bandarban town. you can also enjoy even the appearance of Cox’s Bazar Sea Beach when the sky is clear. The most lucrative scene of Nilachal is the eve of sunset. In the rainy season, you will be thrilled walking through the clouds! It is not bearable the beauty of a moonlight night in a full moon. I confidently believe; you can never forget such a night if you feel the same once. In a winter morning, the full area is covered with the dense of fog that will be awesome foggy experience for you. On the way to Nilachal, you can enjoy the tribal villages with their own culture and expression that must astonish you.  The entrance fee at Nilachal is Tk 20/head.

How to go Nilachal

Nilachal is very near (Just 5 km away) from Bandarban town. You can use your own car, auto rickshaw or Chader gari (public jeep) to visit Nilachal. From my own experience, Chander Gari up-down reserve may cost Tk below 1000.



Food and Accommodation in Nilachal

There is a rest house having two guest rooms maintained by district administration, a cafe and some tea stalls of local habitants in the Nilachal tourist place. To reserve Nilachal rest house you may contact to 0361-62605, 01714230354, 01712718051. Since Bandarban town is near, you may stay in Bandarban town and visit Nilachal also.

Meghla Parjatan Complex is one of the most amazing and highly visited tourist destinations in Bandarban; visitors come not only from Bangladesh but also from all over the world. There are a mini safari park, zoo, Children Park, hanging bridge, cable car and an artificial Lake at the down of the hills where you may enjoy paddle boat.

There is a beautiful rest house having 4 rooms to pass your leisure in Meghla Tourism Complex maintained by Bandarban district administration. No food and drinks from outside are allowed in Meghla Parjatan Complex but you can take lunch packet only if you stay whole day there. To book a room in the rest house, you may officially contact to 0361-62506, 01714230354. Hire of each room is Tk 2000/day. There are two restaurants named “Holiday Inn resort” and “Parjatan Motel” outside the Meghla Tourism Complex. Accommodation facilities are also available there.

Chimbuk hill is one of the top tourist destinations in Bandarban, Bangladesh. It is called the Darjeeling of East Bangal. Someone think, it is more than Darjeeling! How to Go Chimbuk Hill?

Chimbuk Hill is 26 km away from Bandarban town. You can start to the Chimbuk hill using Thanci bound bus or Micro Bus, or any rental cars or Chander Gari (Rental Jeep) from Bandarban city. Up-Down rent may be approx Tk 2500/jeep. On the way to Chimbuk, you have to register your name and particulars to the military check post due to security purpose. It may take around one or one and half hour to reach the Chimbuk hill from the town depending on various factors.

There are two state owned rest houses in this area at the top of the Chimbuk Hill. There is a well managed canteen in the rest house. So don’t worry about your stomach. If you want to stay there, you have to confirm the reservation from the authority. It is a better idea for foreigners to contact Bangladesh Tourism Board to visit Chimbuk Hill.

Nilgiri is one of the tallest peaks and popular tourist destination in Bandarban, Bangladesh. Nilgiri is about 47 km south-east of Bandarban on the Bandarban-Chimbuk-Thanchi rout. Visitor can go there by Thanci bound bus or jeep or you may hire a car, or a Chander Gari (public jeep) to reach Nilgiri from Bandarban city. On the way to Nilgiri, you have to register your name and particulars to the military check post for security purpose. You have to take permission from the DC office of Bandarban in case you are a foreigner. In this case, it is better to take the help of Bangladesh Tourism Board.

There are three luxury cottages ranging around Tk 5000 to Tk 10000 at Nilgiri Resort. There are also three tents having multi beds each Tk 1000 per tent/night. There is a clean and healthy restaurant in Nilgiri Resort. So don’t worry about food and drinks. Spicy Rice, Beef, mutton prepared in bamboo hole without water is really mouth-watering illusive menu in the restaurant. Every meal cost about 300-500 BDT. Various type of tasty foods are also available here.

Saint Martin's is the most beautiful and only coral island in Bangladesh and one of the best Eco-Tourism Destinations among the others. It is called the marine paradise of Bangladesh, located in the northeast part of the Bay of Bengal, just about 9 km south of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula and 8 km west of the northwest coast of Myanmar. The island forms at the southernmost part of Bangladesh and at the estuary of the Naf River that divided Bangladesh and Myanmar marking as the international borderline between the two countries. The island is locally called as “Narikel Jinjira” that means Coconut Island when a lot of coconut grows in this island. Someone called it “Daruchini Dip” due to its lovely landscape and illusive crystal blue water of the Bay of Bengal that surrounding the island. The location of Saint Martin's Island is on the getaway in Bangladesh. The surrounding coral reef of the island has an extension named “Chera Dwip”.

The first human settlement started in the island just about 250 years ago by some Arabian sailors who named the island “Zajira”. During the British period, the island was named St. Martin’s Island. The population of the island is about 7500 and the main profession of the people is fishing. Besides algae collection, tourism services etc are the common profession of the inhabitants. Water transportation is the only way to reach this island i.e. boats and ships (mostly for tourists) from Teaknaf. The major goods for daily livelihood for the inhabitants come from the mainland Bangladesh.

From 1989 to 2004, non-residential Bangladeshis and foreigners were only allowed to visit the island. However, this has changed and now residential Bangladeshis are also allowed to visit the Island. There is no electricity supply from the national grid in the island. The tourist hotels of the island run on generators.

It is possible to walk around the island in a day because it measures only 8 km2, shrinking to about 5 km2 during high tide. You will get the best weather usually from November – February to visit this island. From March to July, the weather of the region may be rough. Very often, cyclone can strike during these times. The island was seriously harmed by the devastated cyclone in 1991 but has fully recovered, and was untouched by the 2004 tsunami. So from March to July is tourist off season.

In the past few years, St. Martin's visitors have increased dramatically. St Martin’s Island is perfect for tourists who wish to revive escaping the monotony of a robotic daily life. The island is all about sun, sea and palm trees. During the tourist season, the island comes alive with water and beach sports, with beach parties and bonfires lighting up the evening sky. The island is very suitable for scuba driving. One may also enjoy engine boat or speed boat tour in the very crystal blue water around this island. Though there is no security problem for the visitors, one can pop down to the Coast Guard station for any kind of security helping. There’s no land phone but mobile phone network. So you can communicate with the world and even you can browse Internet from your wireless devices.

Chera Dip, Saint Martin

Chera Dip is a coral based island adjacent to St. Martin but divided during tides. You can go to Cheera  Dip from St Martin’s island by walking (!) or by local motorboats or tourist boats. A lot of Corals of various species - living and dead form the land of the island. There is a small bush which is the only green part of Chera Dip enhancing the landscape of this island. There is no permanent inhabitant in Chera Dip, so it is advisable to the tourists to go there early and come back by evening. To enhance your enjoyment, you can taste there fry of fresh marine fisheries and green coconut water from a number of mobile shops dedicated to tourist services.

Accommodation in St. Martins Island is limited, so it is advisable to book hotel before you plan to go to this Island. You will hardly get a chance to stay in this hotel if you are a sudden visitor of St. Martins Island. The remarkable tourist hotels in Saint Martin’s are Hotel Nijhum, Prashad Paradise, Sraboni Bilash, Samudra Bilash, Resort Simana Parie etc. Booking of these hotels are also possible from Dhaka, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazaar. All these hotels are situated adjacent to Seashore. From these hotels lobby or veranda, you can enjoy the illusive breeze and romantic sound of Sea. There are also some other motels and hotels established recently in St. Martin’s for tourist accommodation. Besides, the local fishermen and inhabitants also rent their well decorated rooms for tourists’ accommodations purpose. If you are lucky enough, you can spend the exotic moonlit night at St. Martin’s Island. The beauty of Full moon in St. Martins Island cannot be expressed in words, if you are not there at that time.



How to Go St. Martin Island?

You can go there by sea truck, local motorboat or tourist boats. Currently, five shipping liners run daily trips to the island, including Keary-Sindbad, Keary Cruise & Dine, Shahid Sher Niabat, L C T Kutubdia and Eagle from Teknaf. Beside a shipping liner recently inaugurate there service from Cox’s Bazaar. Tourists can book their trip from Dhaka, Chittagong or Cox's Bazar. You need to fly or take a direct bus down to Cox's Bazaar, and then take a bus to Teknaf, which is the most southern police station of Bangladesh. You can also go by rail to Chittagong and then a bus from Bahaddarhat station to Teknaf via Cox’s bazaar. From my own experience, it is better to travel sea truck from Teknaf and take an open dock ticket to enjoy the adventure and thrill of the mighty Bay of Bengal. You will have a chance as a bonus to enjoy the green hill tracts of Taknaf to soothe your eyes in the west and Mayanmar borderline in the east when you are in open dock of a sea truck in Naf River and estuary. Sea trucks leaves Teknaf every morning at 9.00 am, and return from St. Martin Island in the same day at 3.00 pm.

Cox's Bazar is also a town, a fishing port and district headquarters located at 21°35'N 92°01'E. It is 152 km south of Chittagong. The modern Cox's Bazar derives its name from Captain Hiram Cox; an officer serving in British East India Company defeated the Burmese king in 1799 and set up a Bazar (market) here which was named “Cox's Bazar” after him.

How to go Cox's Bazar?

You can start heading towards the Cox’s Bazar by air or by bus. By air form Sahajalal International Airport, Dhaka or Shah Amanat International Airport, Chittagong, You can go directly to Cox’s Bazar Airport through several local airlines such as Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US Bangla Airlines, Novo Air etc. one way fair range will be approximately BDT 4500 - BDT 7500.

You can directly go to Cox’s Bazar by bus as well. There are many bus services from different location of Dhaka and Chittagong. Ticket price range will be BDT 900-BDT2500.

If you are thinking of an adventurous journey with comfort, Train service of Bangladesh Railway is the best option. But unfortunately Train service is available up to Chittagong. From Kamalapur Railway Station or Airport Railway Station, Dhaka you can get board on the train towards Chittagong. Train is available in different time but night journey is best, start at 10.30 pm (Turna Nishitha) from Kamalapur Railway Station, Dhaka. After arriving Chittagong Railway Station, you can go bodderhaat and find the bus services of various companies which can lead you to Cox’s Bazar sea beach, Kolatoli point directly. It is a wish decision for the tourists from abroad to take help of the local tour operators.

Teknaf is about 84 km from Cox’s Bazar and it may be a memorable experience as the journey in marine drive through forested hilly roads. Taknaf is the border town in the southern tip of Bangladesh territory. The side of river Naf and the Bay of Bengal situate Teknaf Town. Ramu and Lamapara

Lamapara is a typical Buddhist village located 16 kilometers away from Cox's Bazar. It is accessible from the main highway leading to Chittagong. The village accommodates monasteries, khyangs and pagodas. The beautiful Burmese Bara Khyang at Lamapara has the country's largest bronze statue and it has three wooden buildings house, a number of relics-precious Buddhist images of silver and gold set with gems and stones inside the pagoda. Moheshkhali Island is another attraction for the tourists who come to Cox’s Bazar. The area of the island is about 268 square kilometers. The center of the island and the eastern coastline rises, a range of low hills, up to 300 feet high. But the coast to the west and north is a low-lying treat, covered by mangrove jungle. In the hills on the coast is built the shrine of Adinath and by its side on the same hill is Buddhist Pagoda. You can go to this Island by local motorboat called trawler or by speedboat from cox’s Bazar fisheries Ghat (Harbor).


Dulahazra Safari Park

Dulahazra Safari Park is an extension of an animal sanctuary located along the Chittagong –Cox’s Bazar highway about 50 Km from Cox’s Bazar Town. The sanctuary itself protects a large number of wild elephants, different type of birds, monkeys etc which are native to the area where domesticated elephants are available for ride. Other animal attractions are lions, Bengal tigers, Crocodiles, Bears, Coital etc. which is wonderful project to attract the tourists.


There are a number of other Islands too. Some names are Saint Martin Island, Chera Dip, Sonadia Island, Shah Pori island etc have enough items to attract tourists.

Dublar Char Island, Sundarban

It is s an island (char) raised from the Bay of Bengal which is situated at the end of the southern part of east sanctuary, 25 km south west of the Kotka tiger point and 35 km in the south east of Nilkamal on the estuary of the river. In the eve of Rash Purnima (full moon) festival of the Hindu community, huge number of tourists visits the spot. People of Hindu community take bath in the sea on the occasion. The area is covered with wide green field, Sea Lake etc. Here you can observe the technique of dry fish processing. ‘Mowali’ (local name of the honey collectors) take shelter here during the season of honey collection. There is also a cyclone shelter and a forest station in Dublarchar.

Muri (puffed rice) or Chira (flattened rice), or Khoi (popped rice) are other items of a traditional breakfast in most Bangladeshi homes in the rural areas. Pati Sapta is a variety of rolled pancakes with Kheer (great delicious, prepared with milk thickened through continuous boiling) filling. During weddings the bridegroom is given Nakhsi Pithas-carved and decorated rice cakes, which are real tasty.

Pohela Boishakh Celebration in Bangladesh

Pohela Boishakh is the first day of the Bengali New Year. Now it is celebrated on the 14th of April of the Gregorian calendar. Celebrations of Pahela Baishakh started from Akbar’s reign. The main event of the day was to open a Halkhata (new fresh book) of accounts. This was wholly a financial affair. In villages, towns and cities, traders and shopkeepers closed their old account book and opened new one. They used to invite their customers to share sweets and renew their business relationship. This tradition is still practiced among the jewelers, local store-businessman, retailers etc. Pohela Boishakh is a public holiday. On the occasion the home is thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned; people bathe early in the morning and dress in fine clothes depending on ability. Women particularly young girls dress up white saris with red borders and men clothed Punjabi, fatua with traditional art in Pahela Boishakh. They spend much time of the day visiting relatives, friends, and neighbors and going to fair. Fairs are arranged in different parts of the country where various agricultural products, traditional handicrafts, toys, cosmetics, various kinds of foods and sweets etc. are sold. These fairs also provide entertainment, with singers, dancers and traditional plays and songs. Horse races, bull races, bullfights, cockfights, flying pigeons, boat racing etc. The most colorful New Year’s Day festival takes place in the Ramna Batamul, Dhaka. Large numbers of people of different ages gather early in the morning under the banyan tree where Chhayanat’s artists open the day with Rabindranath Tagore’s famous song, Esho, hey Boishakh, Esho Esho… (Come, hey Boishakh, Come, Come…).

Eid-ul-Fitr in Bangladesh

Muslim festivals follow a lunar calendar. After a month long fasting in Ramadan, the Holy Festival Eid-ul-Fitr comes with great joy and the occasion of social gathering. Eid ul Fitr is the most important religious festival for the majority Muslims community. The celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr has become a part of the culture of Bangladesh. People shop new dress and other necessary items much on the occasion. City dwellers who have families or parents in villages go to their country homes to meet relatives, friends & neighbors and celebrate the festival together. All outgoing public transports from the major cities become highly crowded and in many cases the fares rises up in spite of government restrictions.


Eid-ul-Azha in Bangladesh

There are many similarities between the celebration of Eid ul-Azha and Eid ul-Fitr in many ways. The only major difference is the Qurbani (sacrifice of domestic animals) on Eid ul-Azha. It is the second major Muslim festival and is celebrated with much meat. Beside the permanent market, numerous temporary marketplaces of different sizes called Haat operate in various places for sale of Qurbani animals (usually cows and goats). The cows are then paraded along the streets and each animal is decorated with paper flower garlands and glitter. Each family that has ability buys cow, bull or goat to slaughter on the name of holy Allah. It is believed that the slaughtering is not animal but the all evil motives of minds. In this occasion, people and relatives are given meats who don’t have ability to buy any animals. This is a tradition of sharing. The occasion is also known as Sacrifice Eid.

At the full moon 14 days before the starting of Ramadan, Shab-e-Barat is a sacred night when sweetmeats are distributed to the poor, neighbors and relatives.


Durga Puja in Bangladesh

Durga Puja is the biggest celebration of Hindu community. It is celebrated during October. On the occasion, the Debi Durga (Goddess) statues astride a lion, with her ten hands holding ten different weapons, are placed in not only regular Hindu temple but also enormous temporary stages. Hindu community shop new dress and so on knick-knack on the occasion. Almost all Puja stage, Village fair sits aside. It is now a day’s one of the most public gathering occasion. Puja stage and such fair is visited not only Hindu community but also all classes of people of Bangladesh.


Pahela Falgun-Bashanta Utshob

The day is celebrated on February 13. A colorful festival held to welcome Bashanto (spring). Attired in reddish-yellow saris with red border and hairs decorated with flowers, young girls and boys wearing traditional pajama and Punjabi, carrying flowers, took part in the colorful march. A good number of kids also got their attractive faces painted with different motifs including birds, national flag, butterflies etc.

Nobanno (Harvesting Month) in Bangladesh

In the rural area, the farmers’ community starts harvesting and with this joy they celebrate Nobanno. They made PAYESH (Sweet dish made with rice and boiled milk), various kind of traditional rice cakes to celebrate Nobanno.


PAUSH PARBON (Winter Season): In this season people celebrate Paush Parbon with Date Juice and various kinds of Pithas. Kuli pitha, Khajer pitha, Vapa pitha, chitai pitha and various date juice based pitha are remarkable. Grihasto (farmer) invites their married daughter and son of law on the occasion.

Adivasi festival: In the eve of the festival, women from the indigenous community demonstrated the magic of weaving to the audience. On the occasion water throwing game is most popular and eye catching. The basic of the game, boys and girls from opposite side throw water to one another and that side can attack more is winner!


Jewelry: Every Bangladeshi woman has an exceptional point of view about Jewelry. Almost all the Bangladeshi women are fond of Gold and Silver. High or high middle classes people show their blue blood wearing diamond or platinum jewelries. Costume Jewelries are also most popular not only among the low earning group people but also educated and cultured guys. Gold is so popular in Bangladesh that it is must in every weeding ceremony. Hindu married women are easily identified by her wrist accessories and their Shidur which is dark red chemicals use in their middle of upper forehead.

Mehendi: It is another popular traditional art in Bangladesh. The design and color attract everybody. Mehendi made by pasting leaves of the plant Lawsonia Inermis. It is a decorative art that is applied as a part of daily life, festive occasions and weddings. The bridal mehendi designs are typically inspired by Mughal paintings mixed in with classical arts. Drawing hands of a bride and groom or the bridal procession are common as well.


Transport in Bangladesh

Transport and communication in Bangladesh takes many forms. There are some transports as the part of culture and customs of Bangladesh. In rural areas bullock cart, buffalo cart and TomTom (Horse pulled car) are commonly used. In old Dhaka TomTom is still found. Bicycles are used both in rural and urban areas. Palki (A box-like shape carried on shoulders by six men) is traditional wedding transport. Bride is carried to the bridegroom’s house riding Palki and returns with bridegroom. The groom procession follows it as well. There is a unique Eco-friendly traditional rickshaw that is available all over the country for short journey. The green outer color of the CNG Auto Rickshaws in big cities reflects the Eco friendly awareness of Bangladesh. Beside it regular auto-rickshaw, Car, Bus, Train etc. are mentionable land transport for long journey. Bangladesh is a revering country and water transport system is very strong and luxurious and comparatively cheap. You can watch Bangladeshi village, local market and public places, corn fields, landscape etc when you travel and guess about culture and customs of Bangladesh. Air transport is also available among the big cities. There are eight domestic airports (active) for air transport.


Social customs like birth, naming ceremony, Circumcision and death too have a distinct Bangladeshi flavors with each ethnic and religious group having their own unique way to mark these traditions.
